The Rite of Baptism requires parents to select “Godparents” for the child being presented at baptism.
Q: What are the responsibilities of a Godparent?
A: The first responsibility of a catholic godparent is to profess the Catholic faith in the name of the child to be baptized. Throughout the child’s life, godparents are involved in their catechetical education and provide a lived example of the Catholic faith.
Q: Can a non-Catholic person be a Godparent?
A: Only a fully initiated practicing Roman Catholic can be a godparent. However, a non-Catholic, baptized Christian who accepts responsibility for helping raise the child to live a Christian life can participate in the Rite of Baptism as a “Christian Witness””, so long as a Catholic godparent is also present.
St. Basil’s welcomes godparents to attend our baptism preparation classes. If you have been asked to be a godparent and you are required you to participate in a Baptism preparation course please feel free to join in one of our upcoming sessions.
