“When I moved to Toronto, St. Basil’s was one of the first churches I found, and I have been coming ever since. There is a sense of harmony, silence and peace in this place – it draws you into deeper prayer. And I need that – I need a tranquil place to pray.
But the Pastor is also a big part of it. Fr. Tom Mailloux, CSB was the Pastor when I first came. He was always around. You could seem him praying his Breviary in the pews and he was a friend.
Friendship is also important. I like people, and so I need people that I can talk about my faith with – preferably with a glass of wine!
I think my faith life was changed when I first started bringing communion to nursing homes. Every time I went, the people there were so happy to see me – they had such delight, in part, because they knew I was bringing Jesus to them. They are a gift to me. I also serve as an altar server which has helped my prayer as well.
I feel like my faith requires me to pray for my unbelief, and to grow in understanding about what the church teaches and why.
My two favourite scripture versus are John 15:5 (‘I am the vine, you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.’); and since I was a little kid – Mark 8:36 (‘What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?’)
My life these days is full of gratitude. There is so much goodness here and so many wonderful things that are being done by the younger generation. I love the changes that are happening here because there is a connection to the history, but it is new and giving new life to those who are looking for it.”
